Wedding Dress

Avoid these mistakes when you buy bridesmaid dresses

Getting married is a very special time and if you are having a traditional wedding, choosing your bridesmaids is one of the biggest decisions you will need to make. Not only do you obviously want to have those who mean a lot to you personally and who can help you to prepare for your special day but also you want them to enjoy the experience and look great in all the photos.

Women come in all different body shapes, which means that finding a dress to suit everyone can be tricky. At the end of the day, it is the bride’s decision and the bridesmaids should always accept her choice; however, there are some considerations before making any decision that can help to make the process fun and stress-free.

Ask the right questions

Don’t ask the bridesmaids what dress they would prefer, as you are likely to get several different answers and potentially cause conflict before you have even started. Instead, ask them whether there are any styles or colours they would be unhappy to wear. In this way, you can start to narrow down the choices early on.

Make sure whatever colour your choose blends in with your own colouring, as there will be lots of photos of you all together that you will be looking at for years to come. One wedding guest recently caused controversy by wearing white to a friend’s wedding, which is considered by many to be a serious fashion faux pas.

Don’t have too many choices

To make your decision, you will need a selection of choices, but not so many that it becomes overwhelming. Decide on a basic design and colour and go from there. Fashion brands such as have a great selection of bridesmaid dresses from which to choose.

Shopping trips

Try to avoid shopping with young bridesmaids and older bridesmaids at the same time, as they can be very different experiences. Children will love trying dresses on but will not want to shop all day, whereas older bridesmaids will have more patience.

Take your time

When your bridesmaids try on a dress, get them to stay in it for a while. Suggest that they sit down and move about to check that it is comfortable, hangs nicely, and stays looking good for more than five minutes.
